Twilight of the Idols

Gorgoroth

Twilight of the Idols (In Conspiracy with Satan) is the sixth album by Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. It was released in 2003 through Nuclear Blast and reissued in 2006 through Back on Black Records. This is the first album on which Infernus was not the main song writer. Instead, the music for this album was composed by bassist King ov Hell and drummer Kvitrafn. The album cover is a depiction of a burning church, but due to the controversy caused by this, some copies of the album feature a picture of the band members instead. Also released, along with Twilight Read more on Last.fm.

For the few metal fans here that don’t know much about Norways chief musical export, I felt it fair to throw a bit of caution your way……and not because I’m easily offended. I’m quite the opposite, but I think its fair that you should know where this music is coming from and why…..

There are no excuses when it comes to Black Metal. If you’re gonna be fan and the content obviously clashes with your convictions, you have to listen to it with an open mind and enjoy it as art, as music. Black Metal groups are usually different from American metal bands like Slayer and Deicide. The difference is most Black Metal bands don’t see what they do as a gimmick. They HATE organized religion with an emphasis on Christianity. They typically follow a pretty disturbing lifestyle (a good lot of them have rap sheets that range from arson to murder). Black Metal is hardcore. I’ve never minded enjoying it from the viewpoint of an innocent bystander watching an execution. My advice is for you to do the same.

That said, and with not a little trepidation, Gorgoroth is a rare gem among the somewhat repetitive scene that Norway has birthed. Their riffs are almost thrash, their time signatures are very American, yet they retain very typical Black Metal vocal stylings. The lyrical content is the typical faux Satanic fare that their peers favor (mostly pagan witchcraft references). It’ not brilliant by any means. The reason that Gorgoroth get’s the star power is for their originality within Black Metal. Whereas most Black Metal groups rarely deviate from the accepted sound, Gorgoroth manage to break the mold. Twilight Of The Idols is the best example of this, a well stacked Norwegian tread through the icy snow, complete with some ACDC style guitar solos and some quite interesting breakdowns.

    Enjoy….sort of.
