I have enjoyed this album tremendously–definitely a winner–something for everyone.
Nashville’s favored son delivers in spades on Guitar Slinger, his 15th studio recording. At the age of 54, Vince isn’t worried about radio play. His goal here seems to be crafting a memorable, diverse selection of original tunes. From the rockabilly title track to somber, evening music like “Threaten Me With Heaven”, the record strays from any pigeon holed demographic. Gill has never been a Stetson wearing cowboy. His country essence lies in his Telecaster licks, his crack bands lap steel, and his endearing lyrical ability to make you feel like your drinking with him. Elsewhere, he channels Eric Clapton on “Tell Me Fool” and George Jones on the startling “Billy Paul”. It’s everything it needs to be…and a little more.
