When I’m not blasting Slayer or replaying Springsteen’s Nebraska, sometimes I like to catch up on radio rock, the typically irony free melancholia that pervaded my ears as a kid.

Train, one of the savvier mainstream pop rock acts of the last decade, is known for their ear candy, incessantly poppy, endlessly accessible guilty pleasure music. Except, for me, guilty pleasures don’t exist. If I like something…I like it.

Train’s California 37 is a few things…its catchy…its consistent…and…surprise, surprise, there is some irony to be found. Will it change history? No. Can I compare it to Springsteen or Mastodon or Steve Earle? No.

BUT, does it rock in the same way REO Speedwagon’s 70’s output did? Yeah. Has it been in shared rotation with Cross Canadian Ragweeds box set all week? Yeah. Will it make you smile? Hell yeah….if you’re not a hipster.

Sometimes, you have to have a Margarita instead of Jack Daniels. That metaphor applies here. So drink up with the windows rolled down.
