
Torche is a band from Miami, Florida, United States. They play a distinctive style of stoner/ sludge metal that they categorize as ''stoner pop''.
The group was formed in 2004 by Steve Brooks (ex-Floor), Juan Montoya (ex-Cavity, ex-Ed Matus' Struggle), Jonathan Nuñez and Rick Smith (who also play in the grindcore band Shitstorm). Unfortunate to say that this is my first Torche album. With that being said it completely lived up to the standards that Kyle and Cliff have set for them. My honest feeling after listening to this album was amazement that it was already finished…so I listened to it again. Full of energy and creativity these boys are.
Why. Isn’t. Torche. The. Biggest. Band. In. The. Universe?!
The brilliant chunks of ‘Harmonicraft’ are fighting tooth and nail with the other, painfully uneventful half of the record. It’s worth every moment to hear the new frontiers Torche is exploring, though. At moments, I caught myself assuming I was listening to Tool, which is probably a great archetype for the progression of Torche going forward: a unmistakably trademark sound pushed to every corner of its existence.
