For once, I’d have to agree with the general public’s consensus on ‘10,000 Days’.

This is a great album, no doubt. Danny Carey is, as always, the band’s most interesting component, leading the way through incredible riffs that seem to have been written, chopped up, and reorganized. Maynard James Keenan can actually sing. It’s going to be difficult to ever get Tool to make a mediocre album because of their immense talent.

But, we were really hoping they would go further down the ‘Lateralus’ rabbit hole, right? I don’t think Tool realized that the five years between this and the previous album allowed plenty of time for the coolness of heavy music to die off from the radio; they could’ve pushed harder in that direction. And, we know no one takes Tool less seriously than Tool themselves, but the ambient tracks on this album are ridiculous- not in a good way.

Tool’s weakest album is still an A-. The weak links here are all interludes, pointless sections of sound that only stand to weaken an otherwise concise progressive piece. The lyrics are Maynard Keenan’s typical philosphical rambles, interesting if not open for interpretation. Adam Jones usual precise riffage stands up well here, punctuating a string of endless exclamations by drummer Danny Carey. This is good stuff.
