In their native South Africa, there’s no rock band bigger than The Parlotones. The Johannesburg-bred quartet have headlined the 20,000-seater Coca Cola Dome in their hometown in 2009, performed at the World Cup Kickoff Concert to an audience of a billion in 2010, and were handpicked by Coldplay to open the British band’s stadium shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town in 2011. In ihrer Heimat Südafrika sind die Parlotones als bekannteste Rockband regelrechte Superstars, international dagegen haben sie trotz großer Medienpräsenz im Umfeld der Fußball-WM 2010 im eigenen Land den Durchbruch noch nicht wirklich geschafft. Auch mit ihrem neuen Album dürfte das schwierig werden, denn auf “Journey Through The Shadows” haben sie den eingängigen, hymnischen Sound ihrer letzten Alben zugunsten von ausgefeilteren Songstrukturen in den Hintergrund gestellt. Die stilistisch bunte Mischung, die von der markanten und facettenreichen Stimme von Kahn Morbee getragen wird, bietet damit zwar abwechslungsreiche und durchaus gefällige Rockmusik, aber die einprägsamen Hits der vorigen Alben sucht man darauf vergebens.
