It was conceived by Allen Klein of Apple Records, who tasked Allan Steckler with putting together an album, since the Beatles were by that time no longer active. Steckler chose songs that had not previously appeared on a Capitol release for a variety of reasons. This means that, while the album covers material from throughout the Beatles' career, it emphasizes the later period, after Capitol began following the original UK releases more closely.
