Use Once And Destroy

Superjoint Ritual

Use Once and Destroy is the first release from heavy metal band Superjoint Ritual. It was recorded in lead singer Phil Anselmo's barn turned recording studio in Louisiana. The guitar and bass work was done by Phil Anselmo and Eyehategod's Jimmy Bower. Drumming was performed by Joe Fazzio. For touring bass duties, Superjoint Ritual recruited Hank Williams III. Anselmo did not want to play bass live because he wanted to focus mainly on singing. Use Once and Destroy is a slightly different approach to music than the work of Pantera, one of Phil Anselmo's other bands. Read more on Last.fm.

  1. gives it a: 4/5

Phil Anselmo is one of the more influential vocalists in metal, a purveyor of loyalty from the past that has helped recharge the scene of today. The gripping thing with Phil is his dedication to it, his honesty for it. There’s not a business oriented bone in Phil’s ravaged body.

That’s what makes Superjoint Rituals debut, Use Once And Destroy, such a genuine ode to nonconformity. It’s not catchy, not technically proficient (even though the players are technically proficient in their respective bands). Phil leads his crew (Jimmy Bower, Hank 3, Mike Fazzio) through 16, mostly two minute thrashers that cascade into one another like crashing stock cars, glass from the previous settling on the next. There’s no hint of Pantera here. Phil doesn’t sing once. Instead, he spasms out choked diatribe after choked diatribe. It’s beautifully uncomplicated and gloriously far from radio.
