Do not attempt to listen to this record casually. If you’ve ever appreciated the weird heavy-jazz of Ephel Duath, consider the Shining their punk younger brother. The goal of any form of technical ‘metal’ should always be to write unexpectedly engaging music; most bands forget that it should be unexpected. You need technicality to take you by surprise- too simple and you come off trite (see: Abigail Williams); too complex and it comes across random. I would note that this album is way over-produced, but I would rather note that all over-produced albums should be done in this way.
