Of Mice & Men was founded by Austin Carlile (vocalist) and Jaxin Hall (bass). Carlile announced the project the day he departed from his former band, Attack Attack!. Of Mice & Men’s self-titled debut album, which was released off Rise Recods and was produced by Joey Sturgis, is a masterpiece. The album kicks off with the song Ydg!? which is abbreviated for “Ya Dig?” The song, as well as the rest of the album, showcases Carlile’s exponentially high pitched screams. Austin’s vocals alone set this band apart from others in the scene. However, Carlile’s screams are met with an equally devastating force: Shayley Bourget’s soaring clean vocals. The song “Second & Sebring” is an example of how complimentary Carlile’s screams are to Bourget’s clean vocals. This was one of the two singles released off the album, the other being “Those In Glass Houses.” The vocals aren’t the only thing that makes this album unique, the musicianship on this album is very well written. From drummer Valentino Arteaga’s opening to “Those In Glass Houses” to the piano ending in “Second & Sebring,” Of Mice & Men truly made a gem of a debut album.
