Neil Young is one of the great pioneers in limited guitar ability. I mean that with complete respect and praise. Young’s solos were wonderful, jagged dirges of distorted noise, avalanches of sonic reverb bleeding into the air. His melodies were (and are) some of the most straightforward of all time, carrying with them a strong sense of purpose.

The Rust Never Sleeps is the greatest live record ever recorded, a snapshot of Neil and the ever reliable Crazyhorse spellbinding the audience with a lonesome, aching acoustic set and then pummeling them with a blast of electric fury in the second half (the birth of grunge?) Rust is a masterwork, a live album with the studio audience dubbed out. It’s purity will rock you.
