People often ask me what the best debut record by any artist is, in my opinion of course. I’ve said time and time again that Ryan Adams solo debut, Heartbreaker is my all time favorite album. That’s true.
But Kris Kristoffersons is the best. This is the equivalent of Muhammad Ali’s first fight. This is the Mona Lisa of singer songwriter records. Kris took everything he learned as a Rhodes Scholar, an English professor and drug abuser and made an album so dark and so full of fire that still stands out. Forget that almost every song on this album (ALL WRITTEN BY KRIS) has been covered and hit the charts. This is the first recording of “Me And Bobby Mcgee”, of “Help Me Make It Through The Night”. The classic “To Beat The Devil” is the standout, a spoken word long form piece dedicated to Johnny Cash.
Kris Kristofferson knew what the hell he was doing. Nobody bought this when it came out. A year later, he was a movie star, songwriter, political figure and an all around badass. The liberal world boasts VERY few badasses. Kris is part of that club.
