While it was a huge stylistic shift for the Followill clan, it was a decidedly great one. Once a deep-seated antagonist of KOL myself, I was enticed by a friend’s summary of this album, one I’ll never forget: “It’s just the perfect songs for a dark, empty theater, or falling in love one night on Route 66.” Its echoey, ethereal sound perfectly mirrors all those nebulous feelings it so indescribably encapsulates. In sound and in scope, it’s the sound of that one summer you were sure you were all at once James Dean and in love (or at least it always will be for me). Also, there are just some darn good songs to be found here. I can’t imagine the Kings ever recapturing this moment.
