Backseat Freestyle is my jam.
The weird-hop album of the year. I dig it way more than I expected to.
It’s probably too early to call it a classic, but it’s certainly a special record. In my mind, the influence of ATLiens-era OutKast has reached the West Coast, where it mutated and spawned a heady, heavy, spacey, awesome spiritual descendent. If you like hip-hop or are just looking to get your mind leveled, you have to listen to this album.
If you close your eyes just as Track 1 begins, your brain will turn this MCs lyrics into a visual setting for your viewing pleasure. The cover even says “A Short Film by Kendrick Lamar.” It’s not hard to make that correlation, 25-year-old Compton rapper is at the top of his game relaying stories of violence, youth and revelation within the 12 tracks. Although the production is mainly handled by up & coming producers, the incomparable Dr. Dre had his hand in the melding of each track into each other.
From beginning to end you WILL be enthralled by this album. One of the best of the year. Definitely one of the best albums in a long time.
