Johnny Clegg's second crossover band Savuka takes its name from the Zulu word for "We have risen". Savuka, like Clegg's first band Juluka before it, mixes African music with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds. They recorded four albums: Third World Child (1987), Shadow Man (1988), Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World (1989), Heat, Dust & Dreams (1993). This is the kind of polished, well produced late 80’s fare that creates a vibe all its own. Clegg’s music is a porthole to South Africa via modern rock structures. It takes you to destinations unknown and keeps you company on the plane. It’s like being transported to a jungle atmosphere of wine and guitar, a thorough, calculated experience built on excellent craft. I’m a recent convert. Join me.
