Helms Alee is a Seattle three-piece formed in 2007 by Ben Verellen (Harkonen, Roy, These Arms Are Snakes) and is completed by Dana James and Hozoji Margullis. The band combines heavy rock with melodic arrangements and seems to have an ear for excellent composing. All members of the band exchange lead vocals duties and occasionally teams up for harmonies. After having released their self-titled and one-sided debut LP on small labels, their full-length debut Night Terror was released on HydraHead in August 2008. Read more on Last.fm

This album is fantastic! There are plenty of bands doing the “doom” and “stoner” rock thing lately, but none as interesting as Helms Alee. The use of subtle yet technical timings on top of heavy hitting rock make for a return listen and listens. Also, with two women in the band, the vocals never become tiring. I can’t count the times I give up on listening to an album after hearing a bearded dude scream for 8 tracks straight. There are also plenty of “calm” and “dramatic” interludes sprinkled throughout the album to give the listener a break before the next explosion of sound. Slick production, great songwriting, and an interesting juxtaposition of vocal ranges and stylings warrant multiple listens to this band!
