Cannibal Corpses first proper outing, Eaten Back To Life is a grand example of the powerhouse early 90’s death metal scene in Tampa, Florida. CC’s pungent brand of gore obsessed death metal wasn’t (in the beginning) about technical proficiency. It was largely based on the distorted, sped up power chords and guttural vocality that now pepper aspects of more broad artists. At the time, when thrash was at its most difficult musically (Metallica’s And Justice For All anyone), CC were bare bones and as far under the radar as anyone could hope to be. They single handedly built their niche, a very closed off and case specific niche at that. Eaten Back To Life isn’t brilliant in comparison to their later work, but its nevertheless a vital entry in the metal pantheon. For metal purists, bands like Cannibal Corpse are both judged harshly and widely respected for straying so far from the mainstream.
