For Emma, Forever Ago is the debut album from Wisconsin band Bon Iver. It was self-released in 2007 and received wider release on the Jagjaguwar label in February 2008 (and on the 4AD label in the UK in May 2008). One of my favorite albums of all time. Pure poetry on every track, and the instrumentals are simply beautiful. Plus, if you’re looking for an ace breakup song, “The Wolves I & II” perfectly encapsulates the heartbreak, the rage, the sadness and the hope. Justin Vernon is nothing short of a genius for making such an amazing, emotionally complex album.
