Even before writing songs for their sophomore album, tensions had grown between second guitarist Mike Ransom and frontman Mark Chavez, and between Chavez and the rest of the band. Soon after the release of Unstable in 2003, Ransom quit. Then Chavez left in 2004. Unstable peaked at #43 in the US, with its title track being the only song to appear on the rock chart (and become their highest charter in the UK), but it ultimately sold just over 100,000 copies in its first year – about one-sixth the sales of their previous album.
