In a breakout year for TDE’s Black Hippy movement, this is far and away the standout release. Hip-hop’s most fully-formed thematic record in 2012 is anchored by sharp, angular lyrical rhythm and spaced-out, thumping beats. Also, any thinking man will appreciate the unique perspective on sociological control beyond our control. It’s a lot for your head, and it’s necessarily great all around.
TDE has been on a roll lately. The collective has released revered albums from Kendrick Lamar & Schoolboy Q. The Black Lipped Bastard has his turn at bat and doesn’t disappoint. Steeped in conspiracy theory and political commentary, Control System has a little something for everyone. Terrorist Threats has Ab-Soul rapping lines about the government’s plan to turn its citizens into slaves. Danny Brown stands out on a featured verse here. SOPA (ft.Schoolboy Q) is also a standout, even if it doesn’t touch on the controversial bill any more than a mere mention in the hook. This is a complete project with thought provoking songs. No filler here.
