15 years ago, I was the biggest 311 fan in the known world (or so I thought). In the years that followed, they became a “nostalgia band” for me – I think the last album that interested me on its face was 2005’s Don’t Tread on Me. What we have in Stereolithic is still distinctly 311 (and therefore may alienate anyone who is already neutral-to-negative about them), but it’s the most progressive and interesting sounds I’ve heard them make in years, and perhaps ever. It’s certainly the only 311 in close to a decade that’s gotten any repeat listens. Take all that for what you will.
I felt compelled to give this album a listen considering it’s release date (today) is March 11th (3/11), but I have to say that the last time I thoroughly enjoyed an album by these dudes was ‘Soundsystem’ in 1999. Surprisingly this album grabbed me from the initial track. I’m more than positive that any diehard 311-fan will enjoy this album, but if you gave up on the band years ago like I did, give it a listen for old-time sake.
