Ocean Eyes is a very defining album in Adam Young’s career. His hit single, “Fireflies” was the song that pretty much launched Young’s career, and made Owl City a household name. I personally enjoyed the entire album. Most people know Owl City by Fireflies, Hello Seattle, or Vanilla Twilight, but just about every track on this album is a gem in itself. Cave In kicks off Ocean Eyes with a very upbeat, happy feel to the song. After the first song on the album, you can already conclude that Young is nothing short of a lyrical genius. Such as in tracks like Dental Care, which is about a trip to the dentists’ office Young states, “When hygienists leave on long vacations / thats when dentists scream and lose there patience.” Ocean Eyes isn’t all fun and games though, tracks like Meteor Shower and Tidal Wave show a different side to Young that we don’t really see on the rest of the album. They show a different emotional side, for an example, when Young asks in Tidal Wave, “Is that the light at the far end of the tunnel / or just the train?” and “I forgot the last time i felt brave / i just recall insecurity.” Young exhibits many different aspects of his vast musical creativity on Ocean Eyes and it, without a doubt, worked for him. Ocean Eyes has been and will always be one of my most favorite albums of all time.
