The Men began as an abrasive punk group before vastly expanding their sound to incorporate influences from country-rock to soul in addition to more accessible song structures. I’m not sure who I thought The Men were when I listened to Leave Home, but I like this incarnation. Open Your Heart, fittingly titled, is a releasing of all the sounds we’d forgotten how to love, forged into a big, earnest, beautiful mess. It’s all those great swatches of the Great American Rock ‘n Roll Tapestry mutated, reimagined, and presented back to you by the parts of your brain responsible for your most vivid dreams. It’s deja-vu and strange and new, all at once. A genuinely great guitar record, for certain. Hail, hail, rock ‘n roll.
