The Decemberists is a folk rock band which formed in 2000 in Portland, Oregon, United States. The band currently consists of Colin Meloy (vocals, guitar), Chris Funk (guitar, mandolin, dulcimer, pedal steel guitar), Jenny Conlee (organ, piano, accordion), Nate Query (electric bass, acoustic bass, cello) and John Moen (drums). Notable former members include Rachel Blumberg (drums, vocals) and Jesse Emerson (bass).

Nicht einmal ein ganzes Jahr nach ihrem letzten Album “The King Is Dead” schieben die Decemberists eine EP nach, die Stücke aus den Aufnahmesessions zu eben jenem Album enthält, die auf diesem aber keine Berücksichtigung fanden. Der Stil ist also vergleichbar, die Qualität der Stücke durchaus annehmbar, mehr aber auch nicht, da wirkliche Highlights fehlen. Für Fans aber eine gute Überbrückung bis zum nächsten Album der Band.
I’d be hard-pressed to say that anything The Decemberists are doing is even approaching mediocre. They’ve carved their niche and they do quite a wonderful job steadily releasing quality music.
My feelings on this EP, though, mostly stem from feeling misled. What this really should have been is a clearly-titled B-sides record, because that would keep me from my mild disappointment: these feel like leftovers. Yes, I do see the parenthetical ‘Home Demo’ in one of the titles, but you’ll pardon me for chalking that up to the band being characteristically eccentric. Point being, it’s fine music, but there’s no reason I see for rushing to make this purchase.
