Slayer is an American thrash metal band from Huntington Park, California. The band was formed in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, drummer Dave Lombardo and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Slayer's fast and aggressive musical style made them one of the "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Slayer's final lineup comprised Araya, King, drummer Paul Bostaph (who replaced Lombardo in 1992 and again in 2013) and guitarist Gary Holt (who replaced Hanneman in 2011). Read more on Last.fm
Every legendary band has a beginning. If you’re Rush, it sucked because Neil Peart wasn’t in your band yet. If you’re the Stones, it sucked because you rehashed Chuck Berry. If you’re Slayer, it sucked because you were a glam band pretending to be evil. That’s right, way before Slayer was pummeling the FCC with metal classics like Reign In Blood and Seasons In The Abyss, they were playing “Ratt esq” 80’s metal musically and attempting, unsuccessfully, to write evil, Satanic lyrics. The combination was laughable, but it was the beginning of a legendary band. The much improved Hell Awaits came next, thus removing the glam and changing the lyrical direction slightly.
