Metallica is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1981 in Los Angeles by vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich, and has been based in San Francisco for most of its career. The band's fast tempos, instrumentals and aggressive musicianship made them one of the founding "big four" bands of thrash metal, alongside Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. Metallica's current lineup comprises founding members and primary songwriters Hetfield and Ulrich, longtime lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo. Read more on Last.fm

Beyond Magnetic is a four track EP of leftover tunes from 2008’s epic return to form, Death Magnetic. After a few repeated spins, I must say these are, for the most part, top shelf contenders for album placement. My one hold out is the opening “Hate Train”, which borrows its gallop and sneer from 1997’s “Fuel”. It’s just too close to being the same song. The rest of this EP could have easily been a part of Death Magnetic. In fact, I’d swap “Hell And Back” with the “The Unforgiven 3”, DM’s only weak point. This is an unmixed, raw EP, all demos. But that doesn’t hurt it. It makes it more sinister. Good stuff.
