A macabre irony, Street Survivors, the cover of which showing the band members engulfed in flames, was released only three days before singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, Gaines sister and Dean Kilpatrick, the group's assistant road manager were killed in a small airplane crash on December 20, 1977. Immediately following the accident, RCA, at the request of Theresa Gaines, Steve's widow, had the flames removed from the cover for subsequent printings of the album until 2007, when the flames from the original album art were restored for the deluxe CD version of the album.
