“It #1″ is a great opener but is in a more restrained form here than it was on 2008 7”. “Standing at the Station” is maybe the album’s highlight, a garage punker that really gets up and goes. “Die Tonight” is the catchiest, showing plenty of the same DNA that informed both the self-titled debut and the first side of “Melted.” Plenty of the rest of this has a formidable, muscular crunch (“In Your Car,” “Can’t Talk,” “Cents,” “Johnny”) while a couple of tracks show Ty really experimenting with the full band sound that was new for him on this record (“Lovely One,” “Untitled #2”); however, there isn’t a lot that’s really memorable about a lot of these tracks and a couple (“Rusted Dust,” “Like You”) are downright lamentable, with the most ill-informed being the cover of “Drop Out Boogie.” Frightfully uneven if still pretty enjoyable, “Lemons” has all the markings of a transitional record: a new, expanded sound for the artist and lots of experimentation within that sonic palette. While this doesn’t contain the genius that the follow-ups would, there’s plenty here that hints at it.
