I really didn’t expect to like this record. Superstar celebs who use their credibility to record professional quality music is kind of annoying.
Too bad this album is so damn good. Marty Stuart produces Billy Bob, who has a distinct, limited Texas voice. Working within those limitations, the two friends create a mostly low-fi, internal dialogue through song. The style is Texas bar band, a rowdy, loose kind of well orchestrated drunkenness that fits a voice like Billy Bobs. Lyrically, the guys got serious chops, alternating between his rough croon and spoken word stories to say whats really on his mind (mainly back roads, hot summers, seedy motels and loose women).
I liked it. I listened to it all day and didn’t get sick of it. Maybe I’m losing my mind.
