The sound is more Memphis, but the songs are as honest and heartfelt as ever. Justin Townes Earle really is one of the great songwriters of our time.

This time around, JTE’s typical loneliness has company in the trumpet and horn duo that anchor the “Memphis Sound” on this album. Lyrically, JTE is where he’s always been, aware of his past, always looking back as he moves on. But never has Memphis sounded so wistful. This Springsteen meets Van Morrison album shines on moments like “Am I Lonely Tonight”, “Look The Other Way”, “Maria”, and “Memphis in the Rain”. But the crowning moment on here is the haunting “Unfortunately, Anna” a worthy addition to the Great American Songbook that has the ghostly echoes of Paul Simon’s “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes”. JTE’s strength is his ability to inhabit his songs, to not just tell a story but make you live it with him. A fine piece of work overall, and one of the better albums of 2012 so far.
